WHAT’S IN A NAME?
“Empathy is a strange and powerful thing. There is no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. It’s simply listening, holding space, withholding judgement, emotionally connecting and communicating the incredibly healing message of You’re not alone”. ~ Brené Brown
My name is Victoria Laing (@viccilaing). Growing up in Africa, and through my work as a model, I have had the opportunity to visit many orphanages. The key element that stuck with me from my visits is that – although these children are provided for in terms of food, clothing and (usually) a basic education – they have no mentors or role models to guide them through their lives, no one to advise them on a suitable career path, or help them go out into the ‘big wide world’. My dream of starting a non-profit organisation to assist these children has been realised – with this, the creation of Hold the Space, a non-profit company registered in the Republic of South Africa.
The aim of Hold The Space is to bridge the gap between children living in underprivileged communities with potential mentors and sponsors around the world. We feel that if these children knew that there was someone there for them, motivating them, backing them up and ultimately Holding The Space for them in what ever they do and hope to achieve – it will give them a greater chance to live out their dreams with a prosperous future.
